Marine animals and Food Web
The Azores is the Mid-Atlantic magnet of marine life. A high primary production leads to a very diverse and abundant marine ecosystem. One interesting discovery from our research found that there is prevalent bio-accumulation from unusual metals. Mercury, Copper, and Zinc were found in mussels, shrimp and different types of fish. Evidence found that these metals were coming from hydrothermal vents and smaller organisms absorbed them. The predators had a higher density of metals due to bio-accumulation than the prey.
